What Are Our Gray Whales Dying From?
A Live Webinar hosted by Michael Atkins
Featuring Steven Swartz and Jorge Urban
Laguna San Ignacio Ecosystem Science Program
Date: March 17, 2021
Time: 7pm-8pm PST (60 minutes)
Location: On Zoom
Come meet the scientists who first detected that something was wrong nutritionally with these whales as early as 2018 (the winter before their Unusual Mortality Event (UME) began. Gray whales migrate down the West Coast of North America to give birth to their young in San Ignacio Lagoon in Baja. In February 2019, the number of gray whales in the lagoon dropped from 149 the year before to 97. Then again in 2020, the UME continued with the numbers down to 63. Will 2021 show this same trend?
From this webinar, you will:
- Learn about the research being done on gray whales in the lagoons of Baja, Mexico
- Find out what might be causing the Unusual Mortality Event for these whales
- See footage of response teams rescuing entangled whales
- Participate in a 15min Q&A
Listen to the experts who have been studying these whales in this locale for over 40 years. They are there with the whales right now as they spend a few months in the lagoons before swimming back up north in the spring. They will tell you what is happening in real time. And you will find out about the ways within your power to help save these whales.
