Alert: Southern California Oil Spill

On October 2nd, a major oil spill occurred from an offshore rig off of Huntington Beach and cleanup efforts are continuing every day along with the rescue of injured wildlife.

Our goal at SOW is getting the public to report animals in distress.

If you see an oiled animal, please call the UC Davis Oiled Wildlife Care Network at (877) 823-6926.

Cal Spill Watch is now registering public volunteers at https://calspillwatch.wildlife.ca.gov/Volunteer

The Coast Guard has established a unified command along with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Office of Spill Prevention and Response.

The volunteer program for the oil spill in Orange County has received an enormous show of support for the environment and the community. Over 10,000 volunteers signed up to assist with the incident response. At this time, the need for volunteers has been fulfilled and CalSpillWatch will be closing its volunteer registration portal. A huge thank you to everyone who signed up and for all your support.

Recreational boaters, here is the unified command’s information for decontamination of vessels:

    • If your vessel has been impacted by the oil spill incident, you can file claim by calling 1-866-985-8366. A plan to decontaminate recreational vessels is in progress by the Office of Spill Prevention and Response.

Your support to help the animals is needed now more than ever!

Your donation will be DOUBLED if you give now as we have a generous donor offering to match donations to SOW.
